The day was as black as night. The squall was building fast and furious, blowing the icy salt-spray aft, and soaking the worn crew. Captain Garmin pulled his woolen coat tightly around his chest and moved in closer to the helmsman. “Take her dead ahead Magellan; I fear we’re witnessing a bloody Nor’easter forming off the coast of Trinidad”, he yelled. “Aye-aye cap’tn, she heavin’ badly sir, I hope we can hold!”

“Batten down matties, we’re in for a ride!” The Captain yelled; his command drowned by the boom of the battered sails flapping in the stiff gale. “I’m going below mate; you’ve got the helm.”

“Aye, Captain!”

Deep below the deck the Captain’s cabin was dark and dank; smoke from the single oil lamp burned his eyes. He looked down, a trickle of seawater was leaking through the porthole trailing to his papers lying on the desk. He lifted his journal like it was a new born babe and carefully opened it to where he’d left off.

January 4 It’s been a bloody bad day. The headwind is strong. I don’t know how long we can hold the course. The crew is complaining; they are afraid for their lives. They don’t know where we’re goin’ or what we are doin’…but I do.

The thought of that treasure just shakes me bones. I have to get my hands on it come hell or high water. It’s takin’ me 16 years to get to here, what with snoopin’ about, listening to the stories about the legend of the map and its promise of riches. I can’t wait to get me hands on those coins…the glorious coins! The island holds the key, that’s where I’ll find him and the final piece of the map. Damn Maloney! Filthy, robbing, lying thief! We could have shared it but he’s a selfish man, wanted it all for him. Pullin’ at the map like a madman, he risked everything and what’d he end up with? A piece of the map, aye, and the most important one at that! He’s on Cat Island, he has to be, even without the whole map he knew where I was headed He’s in for a surprise. I can’t wait to find the mongrel…stick my knife in his gullet. The final piece of the map will be mine!

January 27 It’s been a rough journey but Magellan spotted the seagulls today. Expect to be at Cat Island by morning. According to the map my first stop will be the statue, if we're lucky enough to find it.....

January 28 Approaching the shore today we came upon the large Tiki Statue standing guard on the shoreline. The crew was nervous ‘cause it was so big, looked like a war god. The scallywags dropped to their knees crossing themselves as they begged to return to the ship. I told them they’d be dancing the hempen jig’ if they didn’t shut up.
