This huge limestone rock in the Maumee River was used as a gathering place for Native Americans. The French also had a settlement here in the 1700's with the same name. Chief Little Turtle gathered his braves here in 1774 before the Battle of Fallen Timbers

 | Yesterday we took the baby out for her first really long hike in Pinnacles National Monument. By our pre-baby standards, this wouldn't have been a big deal, but with an extra 15 pounds going uphill, it was a real workout! Pinnacles has some of the best geological formations to be seen in California, thus several Earthcaches reside there. Long live the Earthcache!!! |

Wow! This one was great! Again, I had to decide which of several requirements to post it under. I decided I could probably find another bridge easy enough and I do have another lined up for the 1846. I don't think I can throw a stone across the river but my husband thinks he can (LOL), and maybe he can, so, I decided the most fitting was the Geological Landmark. It's quite an impressive one and very historic too. I loved it! I'm so glad we did this one. If anyone is interested, it's touted as the largest waterfall by volume East of the Mississippi (after Niagra of course) AND considered by many to be the birthplace of American Industry. There's a real nice picture of a 19th Century Engraving of the falls and other pics at the cache page. Curious7

A virtual and an Earthcache. Both at the same location. The Big Rock is an erratic left over from the glaciers. This one was a revisit.

Just take the cut in the mountain there South West of Black Rock and you'll catch up with all the fancy folks from New England heading for the Oregon Trail. (Found: March 28, 2006)

This cache is along the mighty Ohio River, where many pioneers in the past as well as the present used this natural landmark to navigate to the wild west. Found the cache without a problem. Just 2 more to find.

This cache is located at the one of the most beautiful spots in southwest Michigan, where the St. Joseph river enters Lake Michigan. Gorgeous sunsets, and a great place to sit and watch a storm roll in from the west. Visited the cache and sat to soak in the beauty on a glorious spring day. Posted a note.

A prominent land mark in the east Santa Clara Valley. It marks the entrance to Alum Rock canyon which may have been inhabitated by the Taunen; a triblet of the Ohlone Indian Tribe.

There are various big hills around here, but a distinctive formation in the seashore on our island, like a bight (continental shelf margin forming a bay), is also useful for navigation. This was a fun hike!

This cache is known as "A" mountain because it is near the top of a mountain on the west side of Tucson with a big red, white, and blue "A" laid into it in honor of the University of Arizona Wildcats. The mountain itself undoubtedly served as a navigation point for the City of Tucson long before the days of GPS. Cheers, SwimFin

In full view from this cache is a very important early day land mark which is now owned by the City of Tukwila. It will be open to the public as funding becomes available. This location is a high elevation that was very important to the safety of the early day Native Americans. This look out provided an excellent view for miles both up down the Green River Valley and gave them a “heads up” for possible approaching enemy.

Located at a an outcropping of Weverton Formation quartzite along the Appalachian Trail that offers a sweeping vista of the Hagerstown, Maryland Valley. The formation is visable from throughout the valley and a readily identifiable formation that settlers and travelers moving through the area could use to help navigate. (Found 3/28)
